Skyros - Greece
Located to the north-east of the famous island of Evia, is the beautiful
island of Skyros. Often considered a member of the group of islands known
as the Sporades, the island is one that has managed to maintain it's unique
and traditional style.
The island of Skyros is a very traditional and simple island, yet many visitors
to Greece find themselves paying a visit to the island to experience it's
relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Skyros is an island that is rich in vegetation and natural beauty, with rolling hills of green and colourful nature and flowers.
There is a lovely choice of beautiful beaches scattered all around the coastline
of Skyros, making it a wonderful place to enjoy relaxing summer holidays.
Unlike many of the more popular and famous islands in Greece, Skyros is a
relatively unspoilt island, where one can experience a Greek island holiday
of years gone by.
With the small quaint shops lining the narrow winding streets, one can easily
feel as though they have stepped back in time.
The charming and very tranquil main town of the island, known as Skyros Town,
is one where you can admire the beautiful whitewashed houses tat were originally
built very close to one another.
This gives the town a very unique and inspiring setting, and along with the
colourful port of the island, it is the ideal place to find true peace and
relaxation.
There are several interesting and picturesque villages and towns around the
island, though not as many as one would find on the other Sporades islands
of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.
These small traditional towns are perfect for visiting, where you can enjoy
a lovely walk, and enjoy some of the beautiful views stretching out all the
way to the horizons of the waters of the Aegean Sea.
The southern part of the island is very scarcely populated, and visitors here
will not find much in the means of local services or accommodation facilities.
The majority of visitors to the island of Skyros reside in the northern half
of the island, where they are able to find a wider selection of accommodation,
restaurants and cafe bars. The north half of Skyros is an ideal base from
which visitors can then venture out and explore some of the other parts of
the island, including the beautiful southern coast.
For those who enjoy the sea and sun, Skyros has a wonderful selection of beautiful,
untouched beaches spread out all around the coast. During the summer months,
one can head off to a beach, and enjoy pure peace and relaxation.
From Evia, there are several ferry boats that make the trip to and from the
island. One can easily plan to enjoy a day trip to the island of Skyros and
appreciate for themselves it's unique beauty and magical setting.
